Jazz Essay Example for Free

Jazz Essay Brought up in a home where tunes are regularly played in the instruments we have or even just murmured by a relative while doing errands, I have developed to cherish bits of music particularly show, ensemble and the works of art. So when my companions, who are artists themselves, welcomed me to one of the exhibitions of a jazz band during the festival of the University’s commemoration last July 9 at The Technopark, I was feeling rather fearful. It isn't as what you would anticipate my kind of decision. I have consistently epitomized this specific field as an African-American affected cadenced and instrumental type of music. My ears were automatically customized to have an abhorrence to these tunes. Be that as it may, since they began to play, I overlooked my prior impression since I was at that point appreciating the show. Enjoying the delight of tuning in to the peppy of jazz music, I was energized and totally captivated with the deep execution of the Jazz Ensemble. In the hands of trumpeter Roy Barja, trombonist Marko Geron, bassist Jeff Flores and saxophonist Brad Cruz, the creations assumed a one of a kind personality, and one whose enthusiasm can barely be contained. The outfit began with a blast of Jazz Story playing various sorts of jazz music that developed inside the through time until the cutting edge jazz of today. At that point, the individuals from Jazz Ensemble played works of art like Victor Young’s â€Å"When I Fall in Love†, George Gershwin’s â€Å"Someone to Watch Over Me† and â€Å"Pink Panther†. With the assortment of instruments included, lavish harmonies and surfaces satisfied my ears’ want for great sounds. Every craftsman got an opportunity for a nippy glare of exposure. He would play short melodic pieces intended to be rehashed by a segment of the band with developing enthusiasm. They magnificently serenaded and engaged the crowd through vocalist Mara Duran who did vocals on â€Å"Orange-shaded Sky† and â€Å"It must be You†. The gathering kept the group influencing and warbling on our seats in time with the beat. Jazz took my heart out from the main notes that had floated from the instruments up until the faintest tune that was murmured by the breeze. That night, I shut my eyes with a hint of grin upon my lips as I murmur a fragment from the tune Love is Here to Stay.

Social Psychology And Its Effects On Children s Mental...

People learn and gain knowledge through different experiences and these become our guidelines in interpreting future life and unfamiliar situations. These experiences help people to organize the world around them which then also influences their thinking and behaviors on controversial topics such as gender. However, how much are people aware that their attitudes are maybe more automatic than rather voluntary. Is it possible for them to get past their broad assumptions about others based on their limited experiences? There are different fields looking into this subject one of them is social psychology. Researchers have put together a test, Implicit Associations Test, which purpose is to gain more knowledge about people’s mental outlook on categorical associations. I personally wanted to see if I had unknown biases with gender and so I completed the Gender-Science IAT test. It took me around 20 minutes to finish this test and it should reveal if a person associates a particular gender more with science or liberal arts. The test was computed out of three parts. In the first part I needed to answer personal questions about myself such as gender, age, and ethnicity. Anyways, the second part of the test wanted me to answer question about how strongly I associated the different genders with science and liberal arts. Furthermore, it wanted to know my own personal standpoint with these two different fields. The Most Dangerous Game - Character Description Of Zaroff Essays

The Most Dangerous Game - Character Description of Zaroff Lauryn You are all alone in the dark jungle of a mysterious island. You know how you got there and only wished that you couldve prevented it. There is something on the prowl for you. Something bloodthirsty with a flesh reaping desire. But not an ordinary predator. A mischievous, deceitful, twisted creature with a mental capacity comparable to yours. You are trapped. You hear the snapping of twigs and the compressing of the soft moist earth. Your lip starts to quiver, your hands start to shake. You freeze dead in your tracks. Your thoughts spinning complacently in the darkness, covered and blinded by a blanket of little lies. False security has lulled the madness of this jungle into a slumber. You wake up. An eye is upon you. Staring straight down and keenly through, seeing all that you are and everything that you can never be. An eye is upon you. Eyes ready to blink, so you face forward with arms limp and mind reeling. Your destiny has arrived. This deceptive morbid creature is here. The on ly way to grasp on to your survival is to fight back. Are you ready to go? There are many witnesses to General Zaroffs deceptive character. One example is seen when Zaroff tricks Rainsford into thinking that he was welcomed on the island. Zaroff was cunning in his ways and was two-faced. Rainsfords first reaction to Zaroffs display of hospitality was that Zaroff admired him. That tempted Rainsford into staying in that eerie desolate castle. Zaroff invited Rainsford into his home but then forced Rainsford to play along. Zaroff tricked Rainsford into playing his sadist game and beforehand talked about having the best game. Rainsford thought that Zaroff was talking about jaguars or mutant game. Zaroff displays deceit when he says You will be amused, I know, I think I may say, in all modesty, that I have done a rare thing(p.13). Zaroff goes on to brag about how he was so clever in importing a new breed of game. He finds it quite amusing but Rainsford is appalled and disgusted by this mans true nature. He is a very evil man with a sophisticate aura. Another example of Zaroffs deceptive character is seen when he is trying to make Rainsford think that he has a chance at winning the game. Rainsford has no desire for a manhunt, but it becomes obvious to him that he will need to participate one way or another to obtain his freedom. Zaroff says I dont wish you to think me a braggart, Mr. Rainsford. Many of them afford only the most elementary sort of problem. Occasionally I did strike a tartar (a man of the same mental capacity). One almost did win. I eventually had to use the dogs(p.16). That line right there encourages Rainsford that one man of average hunting skills almost defeated this gruesome mastermind. Zaroff thinks that he will win and he knows it. He is a very proud man and could not stand to lose his pride. He would even have to get backup support from the dogs if he didnt win. He had to win one way or another. Finally, Zaroffs deceptive character becomes paramount when Zaroff thinks that Rainsford is dead. Even though Rainsford appears in his room and Zaroff says I congratulate you, you have one the game(p. 21), Zaroff still has to somehow justify his loss. He tells Rainsford he has won, yet he blatantly challenges him by saying basically he wanted to fight to see who really won. Zaroff was deceptive from the second that Rainsford met him, but mostly it revealed its truth in the aftermath. Rainsford often experienced it too late, like when he came to the door at first looking for shelter. He didnt know what he was getting into until he was too far into Zaroffs trap. In conclusion, Zaroffs deceptive nature is a lot like the Germans, under Hitlers rule. They deceived the Jews into believing that they were going to survive, but in the end they killed most of them. Zaroff is a little diferent because ironically he is the one that loses at his own game. So watch

Why Compare Political Systems essays

Why Compare Political Systems essays Comparative politics can be defined as examining political realities in countries all over the world. It looks at the many ways governments operate and the ways people behave in political life. To say that comparing political systems is a waste of time and that we cannot learn anything from this process is a false statement. There are many things that can be learned by studying and comparing political systems, such as how governments are structured and how they function, the process through which governments interact with their populations in pursing community goals, how political leaders and the population behave in politics, and how political leaders and the public think about and feel about politics and how their feelings affect their behavior.1 By studying and comparing these different aspects of different political systems, we are able to learn more about the system in which we live, we can also determine which systems are successful and which systems are not. Throughout time there has always been diversity in political systems across the world.1 Different political systems and governments are two of the many things that make this world a very interesting place to live. In order to better understand how the system in which you live works, you first have to understand were that particular system comes from and how it came about. For example, there is know way to fully understand the political system of the United States without first knowing were the first settlers came from, their reason for coming, and what they did when they came. If people would take time to understand and compare different political systems to their own, the issue of foreign policy, and one group understanding and respecting another would not be as big of an issue as it is today. In order to fully understand democracy you have to do more than just concentrate of the American version of democracy. Democracie ...

Bell Curve and Normal Distribution Definition

Bell Curve and Normal Distribution Definition The term bell curve is used to describe the mathematical concept called normal distribution, sometimes referred to as Gaussian distribution. Bell curve refers to the shape that is created when a line is plotted using the data points for an item that meets the criteria of normal distribution. The center contains the greatest number of a value and, therefore, would be the highest point on the arc of the line. This point is referred to the mean, but in simple terms, it is the highest number of occurrences of an element (in statistical terms, the mode). Normal Distribution The important thing to note about a normal distribution is the curve is concentrated in the center and decreases on either side. This is significant in that the data has less of a tendency to produce unusually extreme values, called outliers, as compared to other distributions. Also, the bell curve signifies that the data is symmetrical. This means that you can create reasonable expectations as to the possibility that an outcome will lie within a range to the left or right of the center, once you have measured the amount of deviation contained in the data. This is measured in terms of standard deviations. A bell curve graph depends on two factors: the mean and the standard deviation. The mean identifies the position of the center and the standard deviation determines the height and width of the bell. For example, a large standard deviation creates a bell that is short and wide while a small standard deviation creates a tall and narrow curve. Bell Curve Probability and Standard Deviation To understand the probability factors of a normal distribution, you need to understand the following rules: The total area under the curve is equal to 1 (100 percent)About 68 percent of the area under the curve falls within one standard deviation.About 95 percent of the area under the curve falls within two standard deviations.About 99.7 percent of the area under the curve falls within three standard deviations. Item Nos. 2,3 and 4 are sometimes referred to as the empirical rule or the 68-95-99.7 rule. Once you determine that the data is normally distributed (bell curved) and calculate the mean and standard deviation, you can determine the probability that a single data point will fall within a given range of possibilities. Bell Curve Example A good example of a bell curve or normal distribution is the roll of two dice. The distribution is centered around the number seven and the probability decreases as you move away from the center. Here is the percent chance of the various outcomes when you roll two dice. Two: 2.78 percentThree: percentFour: 8.33 percentFive: 11.11 percentSix: 13.89 percentSeven: 16.67 percentEight: 13.89 percentNine: 11.11 percentTen: 8.33 percentEleven: 5.56 percentTwelve: 2.78 percent Normal distributions have many convenient properties, so in many cases, especially in physics and astronomy, random variations with unknown distributions are often assumed to be normal to allow for probability calculations. Although this can be a dangerous assumption, it is often a good approximation due to a surprising result known as the central limit theorem. This theorem states that the mean of any set of variants with any distribution having a finite mean and variance tends to the normal distribution. Many common attributes such as test scores or height follow roughly normal distributions, with few members at the high and low ends and many in the middle. When You Shouldn't Use the Bell Curve There are some types of data that dont follow a normal distribution pattern. These data sets shouldnt be forced to try to fit a bell curve. A classic example would be student grades, which often have two modes. Other types of data that dont follow the curve include income, population growth, and mechanical failures.

Are laws that protect us from our own dangerous behaviors (such seat Essay

Are laws that protect us from our own dangerous behaviors (such seat belt or helmet) morally acceptable - Essay Example Controversies over the laws which are basically designed for protecting people from dangerous behavior are problems of paternalism. Paternalism is interference in people’s freedom though it is for their own good. It is like a father making decisions for his kids instead of letting the kids make decisions for them, considering one important thing that father knows best. Wide range and variety of laws, practices and actions are taken into account which is under the principles of paternalism. More like a doctor or physician deciding what is best for his patients and the laws which are designed to restrict the use of cocaine, marijuana, heroin and other drugs. Such plans also include compulsory retirement plans, mandatory seatbelt laws which are designed to protect one’s interest whether they are liked by the people or people detest them. All these paternalistic practices are common, but the question is whether these practices are morally accepted or not. There is conflict of two important values attached with paternalism which include the value is taken into account for protecting and also promoting well being of others, along with the value which is associated with the freedom of persons which make their lead their life according to their wish and choice. When the people are ready to act in certain ways oppose to their own well being and security , an important question arises that are the laws justified which interfere in people’s private choices and matters. This is what leads to the problem of paternalism. There is a majority who would agree that paternalism becomes a justified thing when it is about a person who has limited and also impaired freedom of choices whether the cause of this is limited cognitive capacities or even the ignorance of facts, effects of a disease, influence of drugs and another reason can be due to coercion. Paternalism varies depending on the person, their emotional stability and behavior along with the capacity to understand and know what is best for them. According to many moral philosophers, a competent and a knowledgeable person should be allowed to make decisions freely and they should not be over ridden, though they are for their own person’s good. There was a case voiced by John Stuart Mill who was a British philosopher during the nineteenth century, according to him the only reason due to implement and make laws for the citizens and people of civilized community is to prevent problems and harm to others. Will of one’s own being is not enough physically and even morally. The laws are made for a collective society and laws which are beneficial and important for protecting the society over all. According to Mill, it was important to provide freedom as it is important and crucial for people’s individual personality development. Along with that people should be given a free hand for making choices they wish and like even if the choices are not the best ones. All these individual choices creates ability for people to make decisions and their decision making power will only improve their practices and experiences. Another important view which he holds was that individuals are the best judge for

Female Genital Mutilation Essays -- Exploratory Essays Research Papers

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I decided to do this paper in an effort to try and become less ethnocentric and find an appreciation of cultural practices which were not of my own.   I feel I have found a deeper appreciation for many African cultural practices, but my research of African culture has exposed me to many practices that seem inhumane and barbaric. One cultural practice that I just cannot bring myself to agree with is the treatment and oppression of African women by men. Through my studies on Female Genital Mutilation, I had hoped to find a valid explanation for this procedure that is so frequently being done to women and female children.   Instead, I found something deep within myself that wishes this mutilation would come to an end.   Allow me to provide you with the facts.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Female Genital Mutilation, sometimes also referred to as femal circumcision, is a surgical modification of the female genitalia.   Ther are four forms of female genital mutilation.   The first is called Mild Sunna.   It is the removal of the prepuce of the clitoris.   It is comparable to male circumcision when the foreskin is removed from the penis.   Next there is the Modified Sunna which is the partial or total removal of the body of the clitoris.   Then you have the Clitoridectomy or Excision.   This is the removal of all or part of the clitoris as well as all or part of the labia minora.   Lastly, there is Infibulation or Pharaonic circumcision.   This consists of a clitoridectomy and the removal of the labia minora and also the inner layers of the labia majora.   The raw edges of the vulva are then sewn together with catgut or brought together by use of thorns.   A small sliver of wood or straw is often then inserted into the vagina to prevent complete occlusion and to ... ... Nearly one hundred fifty million females have undergone this procedure and it is estimated that each year 2 million individuals are still at risk.   I am hoping that this information will grab at the hearts of others and educate readers on the facts of Female Genital Mutilation.   With that, I devote this to my sisters in Africa in hopes that this violation will one day come to an end. Development of the Adolescent

Crystal Herring September 3, 2003 Mr. Boyleston English 101 Face it! Reality TV is here to stay. No matter what you do or which channel you try to derail you are eventually going run into to one of those shows that reals you in. It's something that keeps the TV audiences on the edge of their seats with their cliff hanger endings, displays of raw, unbridled emotions, and insane ways people behave for love, money and fifteen minutes of fame. Through the eyes of a classic example of a teenager growing up on MTV's Real World, I see reality TV as an escape from the boring rigors of my own life to then in turn concentrate on omething more exciting and humorous. It's clearly apart of our society, and many others also, that we as Americans thrive on these sort of sitcoms. When we think our lives are at their worst just watch a complete stranger having troubles and it is strangely comforting. Is quality entertainment infact watching people make complete fools of themselves for the soul cost o f being on TV? Well, that is a question which is personally acquired. For me, eating bugs doesn't validate my insecurities and make me feel that I am the bigger, stronger person. Personal acheivements and triumphs definately fill that void for me.So I agree that the producers of these shows can sometimes take them to extreme measures for ratings, but isn't that the purpose? It's a dog eat dog world, survival of the fittest. My response to this is I can simply choose to entertain myself with certain reality shows such as The Real World and hate Fear Factor. That is the beauty of it all. Don't let one bad apple spoil the whole tree. Give a particular show a chance. You could find things in yourself you would personally like to change by seeing flaws in other people and watching this blunt form of reality can really make you realize what kind of eople you like. Reality shows are harmless, entertaining and clearly not going any where any time soon. When you have millions of public viewe rs watching a particular season finale that's entertainment. So until our society doesn't thrive on living vicariously through other's lives, there's no way that anyone can protest enough against reality TV to get rid of this type of mass entertainment. Anti-reality show viewers would have to convince the entire United States of America and many other countries that reality TV is degrading and frivolous. And that, you see, is another show all together.
